Hello Emma.
The man in the photograph seems to be dressed in sixteenth century costume. I suppose that Stirling Castle identifies more with that period because of all the romance that has come to be associated with Mary Queen of Scots who was crowned there as a baby. She also spent time at Stirling after returning as an adult from France to reign as Queen. However, the castle had been the scene of earlier significant events in Scottish history. It was held by English forces after the English King Edward I (Longshanks) had invaded Scotland during the war with the Scots when John Baliol was king. At various times the castle was taken from the English by both William Wallace and Robert Bruce. In the seventeenth century, the English Roundheads made the garrison surrender after the defeat of Charles II at Dunbar. Although the forces of Bonnie Prince Charlie took the town of Stirling they were unable to force the castle defenders to surrender. That was the last time that the castle was attacked.
