Hello Emma.
It is interesting that the Scots would make a tapestry about Prestonpans celebrating a military victory in the same way that the Normans did by making the Bayeux Tapestry. They seem to be proud that a Scottish force had beaten an English army. However, at the time the lowland Scots seemed to be content to live under English rule with a German speaking Hanoverian on the throne. If more Scots had rallied to join Bonnie Prince Charlie’s army then the English might have been defeated and a Stewart king might have retaken the throne. Many Lowlanders seemed to be suspicious of the Highlanders and did not trust or even understand the Gaelic speakers. Some Scots joined the English army, so there was opposition to the rebellion even in Scotland. Without sufficient support from more Scots the rebellion was doomed to failure. By making a tapestry of Prestonpans it seems that the Scots have finally decided that a Scottish victory over the English was something to be celebrated, and that it might have been better if the Scottish Stewarts had regained the throne.
